Words from Our Community

Hear from students who have experienced the transformative power of classical dance training.

Raniya Ma'am has transformed my daughter's understanding of Bharatanatyam. Her patience, depth of knowledge, and personal attention are extraordinary. My daughter performed her Arangetram last year and it was flawless.

Bharatanatyam — Arangetram Preparation

I joined as an adult beginner, terrified I was too old to learn. Within six months I was performing in our school's annual show. The holistic approach — music, expression, rhythm — is unlike anywhere else.

Anita Krishnan

Bharatanatyam — Foundation

The Kuchipudi programme is exceptional. The dramatic elements and footwork training gave my child a completely new artistic dimension. Raniya Ma'am brings decades of stage experience into every class.

Little Dancers (Age 4–10)

As an NRI, I was nervous about finding authentic classical training. The online enquiry process was seamless and the curriculum is completely aligned with traditional Kalakshetra style. World class instruction.

Questions & Answers

Frequently Asked Questions

We welcome students from age 4 onwards in our Little Dancers programme. For classical technique training (Foundation level), we recommend starting from age 6. Adult learners of any age are welcome — we have students in their 40s and 50s who started as complete beginners.

No prior experience is needed for our Foundation level courses. All you need is passion, commitment, and the willingness to practise regularly. We assess each student individually and place them in the most suitable batch.

Yes, we offer both in-person classes (Chennai) and live online sessions via Zoom. Online students receive the same curriculum, individual feedback, and access to recorded sessions for review. International students from UAE, UK, Singapore, Canada, and Australia currently learn online.

The Arangetram is the formal solo debut performance of a classical dancer — a significant milestone in the Bharatanatyam tradition. It is a full-length solo recital of 2–3 hours, presented to an audience and accompanied by a live orchestra. Students typically prepare for 18–24 months before their Arangetram.

Classes are held on weekdays (evenings) and weekends (mornings). Each batch has a maximum of 8 students to ensure individual attention. Timing slots are assigned based on level and availability, and are discussed during the enrolment process.

Both are classical Indian dance forms with ancient roots. Bharatanatyam (Tamil Nadu) is characterised by precise geometric positions, intricate footwork, and structured compositions. Kuchipudi (Andhra Pradesh) is more fluid and theatrical, incorporating dance-drama, fast spins, and the signature Tarangam (dancing on a brass plate). Both share mudras and emotional expression (Abhinaya) but have distinct styles.

Fill the enquiry form on our website with your details. Our team will contact you within 24 hours to schedule a free assessment session. We discuss your goals, assess your current level, and recommend the right course. Enrolment fees and batch allotment are confirmed thereafter.

Absolutely. Adults can learn Bharatanatyam online effectively through live, interactive video sessions. At Raanaa International School, many students are working professionals and adults in their 20s, 30s, and beyond who began as complete beginners. Our online classes provide real-time corrections on posture, footwork, and expression — the same quality of guidance as in-person training. The key is a structured curriculum, small batch sizes, and a teacher who gives individual attention.

It is never too late. While tradition encourages starting young, adults bring unique strengths — discipline, emotional maturity, and a deeper appreciation for the art — that younger students often lack. Raniya Rana has trained students who began Bharatanatyam in their 30s and 40s and have gone on to perform confidently on stage. Whether your goal is recreational, fitness, or stage performance, you can absolutely begin as an adult.

Kalakshetra style Bharatanatyam, developed by Rukmini Devi Arundale, is characterised by geometric precision, erect posture, and a strong devotional quality. It emphasises clean sculptural lines and spiritual aesthetics, distinguishing it from other styles like Pandanallur and Vazhuvoor. Raniya Rana is trained in the Kalakshetra tradition, which forms the foundation of all Bharatanatyam training at Raanaa International School.
